Bears’ Rome Odunze clarifies ‘new normal’ injury revelation that had everybody panicking

Chicago Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze will have a lot more on his plate this season with DJ Moore traded to the Buffalo Bills, which means he’ll most likely be WR1. Odunze noted earlier in the offseason that he had some foot injuries last season that forced him to miss some time, and used the phrase “new normal” to explain how he was recovering.

At the time, it caused concern because some thought he was alluding to not being the same after the injury. The good news is that Odunze didn’t mean it in that way, and he recently clarified his statements during training camp.

“I just set up a fastball for y’all on that one,” Odunze said via Dan Wiederer of The Athletic. “That one kind of just went with the wind. I really didn’t articulate that well, honestly. That’s really not what I meant.

“I had an injury. That’s it. That’s football. My foot feels great. My foot feels amazing. Through our training staff here, the training staff I work with in the offseason and all the work I put in to get it right, honestly it’s not even something I think about anymore. Which I think is the best feeling you can have after an injury. So I know ‘new normal’ has a bunch of connotations of chronic and severe and like it’s never going to be the same. It’s not like that at all. I’m completely fine.”

That should be a breath of fresh air for fans, and they’ll be excited to know that Odunze is ready for the season.

Last season, Odunze finished with 44 catches for 661 yards and six touchdowns. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he doubled those numbers this season, and he and Caleb Williams might be connecting more often than usual.
