Todd Monken just met Deion Sanders at Browns training camp, and here’s what happened

The Cleveland Browns are currently taking part in training camp as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 NFL season. The Browns have several questions to answer before the season gets underway, including who will be their starting quarterback in 2026.

The two leading candidates for the job are veteran Deshaun Watson, to whom Cleveland has committed a large chunk of cash, and rising second-year player Sheduer Sanders, son of NFL legend and Colorado football head coach Deion Sanders.

Recently, Browns head coach Todd Monken revealed that Deion stopped by practice this week, and detailed how that interaction went.

“First of all, he did an unbelievable job with Shedeur. Great kid, and obviously an elite football player… and then as a coach, wow, everything that he’s achieved. That was awesome,” he said, per Scott Petrak of The Chronicle-Telegram and Medina Gazette.

Deion Sanders has never been shy about using his star power to leverage opportunities for his sons, but it doesn’t seem that he used this particular encounter to do any pining on Shedeur’s behalf for the Browns’ starting job this year.

Shedeur Sanders took over as the starter down the stretch of last season after the team had already cycled through both Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel, and he produced mixed results on the season, at times flashing the talent that made him a standout under his father’s direction at Colorado, while also struggling at times to adjust to the speed and physicality of the NFL level.

In any case, Monken still has over a month to decide who his starting quarterback will be before the Browns get their 2026 season underway on September 13 with a road game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
