Bengals’ Shemar Stewart gets crucial update after injury scare
The Cincinnati Bengals got training camp underway this week as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 NFL season. The Bengals received a scare on Wednesday when rising second-year pass rusher Shemar Stewart went down with a knee injury that caused him to be carted off the field.
On Thursday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network provided the latest update on Stewart’s injury.
“#Bengals edge Shemar Stewart, who was carted off yesterday after a scary looking knee injury, suffered just a hyperextended knee and will have treatment, per me and (Adam Schefter),” reported Rapoport on X, formerly Twitter. “…The belief is no ligament damage for the naturally bendy Stewart.”
“He’s good,” added a team source, per Rapoport.
At this point, no timetable has been announced for when Stewart will be back on the practice field at training camp.
Stewart had a shaky rookie season for the Bengals last year after contract drama threatened to put a hold on his NFL career altogether. While there’s no doubting his elite athletic tools, he struggled to translate them to consistent production at the professional level last year, leaving fans hoping for a step up in production in Year 2.
The defense will be the overarching storyline for the Bengals this year, as there is little question about the offense’s ability to produce–that is, assuming Joe Burrow is able to stay healthy, which is a major caveat.
The Bengals’ defense has been among the worst in the NFL over the last few seasons and has prevented the team from recapturing their contending heights of the beginning of the decade.
Cincinnati is slated to kick off its new season on September 13 at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
