Vic Fangio’s cryptic Jonathan Greenard injury update brings plenty of concern

In an unfortunate development, the Philadelphia Eagles placed Jonathan Greenard on the active/PUP list after suffering a pectoral injury during a lifting session before training camp.

Greenard is in his first year with the Eagles after being traded by the Minnesota Vikings in June, along with a seventh-round pick. In exchange, Philadelphia sent a sixth-round pick and a seventh-round pick. Greenard was immediately given a contract extension by the Eagles for four years worth $100 million.

But before he even played a snap for Philadelphia, it seems the 29-year-old linebacker would have to be put on the back burner.

While some claimed that Greenard would not be out for an extended period, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was “not as confident,” according to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Ashyln Sullivan.

“He is going to miss a good bit of time,” said Fangio.

Sullivan noted: “Fangio applauds how Greenard has handled himself in the meeting room, but states the only way to integrate into this defense fully is to be on the field.”

Fangio did not specify the severity of Greenard’s pectoral injury, but he was pragmatic about the situation. He rued the missed opportunity to quickly assimilate the one-time Pro Bowler.

Last season, Greenard saw his numbers dip to 38 total tackles and 3.0 sacks, as he was limited to 12 games due to a shoulder injury.

Greenard, who is in his seventh year, was supposed to be an extra weapon on the defensive end for the Eagles. He, however, might have to wait before making his debut in his new environment.
