What Steve Kerr is saying about Warriors’ repeat failures to land superstar sidekicks for Stephen Curry

One of the main priorities of the Golden State Warriors in the offseason was to retain coach Steve Kerr. They were able to do that, signing him to a two-year contract extension worth $35 million.

As soon as Kerr was back on board, the Warriors pivoted their attention to the roster. Getting more help for Stephen Curry was imperative. They had clear targets: Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James. If they could get them both, why not? But when the smoke cleared, the Warriors ended up with nothing.

Now that the options in free agency have dried up, it appears Golden State will have to rely again on Curry to carry the cudgels. Different year, same onus.

Kerr, however, offered a different perspective about their situation, as reported by ESPN’s Anthony Slater.

“You have to understand your place in the league and where everybody else is and what the future looks like. Mike (Dunleavy) is really smart and prudent. He understands the landscape. Joe’s (Lacob) in agreement on that. We’re all pretty much really on the same page in terms of just being wise,” said the four-time champion coach.

“(Sometimes), not making a move can be the best thing to do for your future. You keep stacking up good moves and eventually you pounce when you’re ready.”

The Warriors will feature a familiar core of Curry, Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, Al Horford, Brandin Podziemski, and Moses Moody, while Kristaps Porzingis will enter his first full season with the squad.

There are obvious concerns about the lineup, especially since Golden State failed to qualify for the playoffs last season, and the team’s only notable addition is Yaxel Lendeborg.

The 60-year-old Kerr maintained that they will not be lacking in motivation.

“We’ve got good players. We do need some better luck health-wise, but I think we’ll get that. What we did last year wasn’t good enough. We’ve got to do a better job of just really finding the style of play, the two-way basketball we need,” added Kerr.

“It’s not sexy, but it’s in the details.”
