More details are coming out about NFL legend Tony Romo’s recent drunk driving arrest, including what the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback might have lied about while being suspected of OWI (Operating While Intoxicated).

The bodycam footage of his arrest has been released, and during it, he told police that he was on his way to see “grandma and grandpa” before being stopped. He was coming from the Wisconsin Amateur Championship after having competed in the first round earlier in the day.

That could have been a plausible excuse, given that he grew up in the area. However, The Sporting News pointed out that all four of his grandparents are dead. When was Tony Romo arrested for drunk driving?

On Thursday, July 23, 2026, Romo was arrested on the Milwaukee interstate in the evening around 6 pm. He alleged that he was on his way to see his grandparents, claiming he had “zero” drinks.

The officer then conducted field sobriety tests, which prompted the former NFL star to say he wanted to call his lawyer. He would later be detained for a potential OWI. The officer said that Romo had “red, glassy eyes and the odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage. They also noted that there were unopened alcohol shooters in his bag. The New York Post later reported that he had an “open bottle of an alcoholic beverage” on the passenger side of his vehicle.

He was arrested after performing the field sobriety tests at the station. When asked to take a breath test, he denied, saying, “I’ve heard from all the lawyers don’t ever do that. So, we’re not going to do that.”

This was his first offense, and Romo requested a hearing to challenge the citation. He was given a court date of Monday, Sep. 21, 2026.
