It’s widely believed that Romero, Tottenham’s club captain, has played his final game for the club, calling time on his five year spell in the white half of north London.
The Argentina centre back has represented Spurs on more than 150 occasions since signing from Atalanta, initially on loan but permanently signing for the club for £43m back in 2022.
The highlight of his time at the club will no doubt be captaining the team in the 2025 Europa League final in Bilbao, in which a 1-0 win over Manchester United ended a 17-year trophy drought.
The centre back still has three years remaining on his contract having signed an extension last summer, so the club can still get a good fee for Romero, who started six of the seven games for Argentina en route to winning the World Cup in 2022, playing every minute of both semi final and final.
Chelsea are priced as second favourites at 2/1 to make a move for the Premier League proven defender, who has expressed his desire to leave Tottenham this summer.
The Blues have plenty of options at centre back in their squad, particularly following the recent signing of Maxence Lacroix, but are thought to be in the market for a more proven option with experience to lead the likes of Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, whose departure has been rumoured, and Wesley Fofana.
New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is looking to build a team that can challenge in all three competitions this season, having not qualified for Europe, and someone with Romero’s skill set could prove valuable.

Inter Milan are thought to be in the driving seat for the Argentine’s signature, which would mark a return to Italy after five years in London, having previously spent three years in the country playing for Genoa, Juventus and Atalanta.
Inter won the Serie A title by 11 points last season and are looking to win back to back league titles for the first time in 17 years this season, and looking to bolster their squad to do so, as well as improving in Europe having failed to reach the last 16 in the Champions League last season.
There have been rumours linking star centre back Alessandro Bastoni away from the club this summer, so Romero could either be a replacement or a potential partner at the heart of Cristian Chivu’s side’s defence, with the likes of Yann Bisseck and Manuel Akanji also on the books.
A move to Spain is also not out of the question for the 28-year-old, with both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid keeping tabs on the World Cup winner’s situation, but the name that will be grabbing most headlines is Tottenham’s main rivals Arsenal being priced at 10/1.
The Gunners were recently hit with the news that stalwart centre back William Saliba will miss the first few months of the season, so could be in the market for another no nonsense centre half to fill his shoes.
Sol Campbell, another centre back, was the last senior player to make the trip to from Tottenham to Arsenal, 25 years ago now, a move he was vilified for by Spurs fans, who still refer to him as ‘Judas’ to this day, so Romero repeating the feat this summer would be remarkable.
