Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was recruiting LeBron James to 76ers before signing

History is set to be made as the 41-year-old LeBron James is scheduled to make his Philadelphia 76ers debut in the 2026-27 season. Last week, James shocked the world when he confirmed his departure from the LA Lakers and confirmed he would join the 76ers. James also reportedly agreed to a major pay cut and accepted a two-year deal worth $8 million.

While James’ NBA future remained doubtful, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has now revealed his role in bringing James to the 76ers. James has come to Philadelphia to win a championship in his 24th season.

Shapiro appeared in an interview on the Stephen A. Smith Show, where he revealed that he personally pitched James to join the 76ers a week ago when the two came together for a dinner.

“When I saw LeBron James at a dinner about a week ago, I shot my shot. I told him how Philly would love to have him, he could win a championship here, and this would be a great place for him to bring his talents,” Shapiro said. “He obviously made decisions for whatever reasons he did, and I’m damn glad he chose Philly. Thanks to Rich Paul for taking us seriously in Philly. Kudos to Josh Harris and the ownership team, and Mike Gansey and Bob Myers, who have been making moves this offseason. Now he’s got a front core with two guys who know how to win a champ with LeBron James and Jaylen Brown. It’s going to be amazing.”

Despite signing with the 76ers, James is going to stay in New York and travel to Philadelphia for his time with the 76ers.
