Fever’s Sophie Cunningham fires back at ‘truly embarrassing’ antics by Storm co-owner

The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind for Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham, whose comments about trans athletes went viral and have garnered varied responses.

Apparently, when the Fever played the Seattle Storm on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, some of the players and co-owner Celeste Keaton allegedly made mocking gestures and insulted the girls who were cheering on Cunningham.

The Storm issued a statement to Fox News Digital that read, “We are aware one of our co-owners made comments to two fans in attendance at last night’s game. We apologize that this happened. Everyone who attends a Storm game deserves to feel welcome, and we remain committed to creating an inclusive environment where every fan is treated with respect.”

The story prompted a response from Cunningham, who again emphasized that she has “love for EVERYBODY.” That includes “biological girls, biological boys, trans women, and trans men.”

However, she was not happy about the allegations against the players, and specifically took issue with Keaton’s antics, calling them “truly embarrassing.” She doubled down, saying, “Unfortunately shows the type of leader she is.”

Cunningham will be sending “gifts” to the girls who stood up “for what they believe,” as she put it, rewarding them for what they went through.

According to Fox News’ report, the girls wore XX-XY Athletics shirts and were carrying homemade signs that thanked Cunningham.

Brandi Kruse, who helped organize the gathering outside of the venue, sat near the girls. According to Kruse, “fans began booing the girls when they stood up for photographs before the game and between quarters.” Kruse even said fans were “relentlessly booing at them.”

Per Kruse, some of the Storm players directed thumbs-down gestures at the girls. One of the thumbs-downs came when one of the girls wearing an XX-XY shirt danced during a break in the game. At halftime, one of the girls was “sobbing.”

One of the girls alleged that an older woman who was associated with the Storm came up to them, yelled at them, calling them “f*****g insane.” The woman was later identified as Keaton, who is part of the team’s ownership group.

The Fever ultimately won the game against the Storm by 10 points. Cunningham scored 11 points, making three of her four three-pointers.
