Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy’s son Elijah to undergo competency evaluation after shooting mom

At a brief hearing on Thursday, July 30, 2026, Eric Bieniemy’s son, Elijah, was granted the ability to undergo a competency evaluation after shooting the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator’s wife, Mia, on Sunday, July 26.

His public defender, via The Athletic, said in court filings that Elijah Bieniemy “appears to suffer from significant mental health issues” and “does not appear able to assist in his own defense at the present time.”

Bieniemy’s attorney initially filed two motions. The first was to evaluate his competency, and the second was for a mental health evaluation. The latter was temporarily withdrawn after his attorney alleged that he had previously been diagnosed with a “serious illness.” She stated that his mental state at the time of the shooting “will play a crucial role in his defense and that he is ‘indigent’ and lacks the financial means to pay for a sanity evaluation on his own.”

According to The Athletic, this isn’t the first time Elijah Bieniemy’s mental health has led to a run-in with the police. In February 2017, police conducted a welfare check at the Bieniemys’ home in Kansas. The search was done after Eric Bieniemy expressed concern about his son and called the police. Elijah had another run-in with law enforcement in October 2022. He pleaded guilty to driving 103 mph in a 75-mph speed limit zone. This resulted in a $177 fine that he paid.

Bieniemy’s wife, Mia, was shot twice in their home in Ashburn, Virginia. Their son, Elijah, had been arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling.

Luckily, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters that she had been transferred from the ICU on Wednesday, July 29. Eric Bieniemy had left Missouri to be with his wife during her recovery. It is still unknown when he will return to the team.

Elijah Bieniemy’s preliminary hearing has been moved from Aug. 31 to Sep. 9. That comes just five days before the Chiefs’ Week 1 matchup against the Denver Broncos.
