Browns GM Andrew Berry’s take on Deshaun Watson vs. Shedeur Sanders must be seen to be believed

As the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback battle between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders has been ongoing with no winner yet in sight, the latest comment from general manager Andrew Berry will have fans scratching their heads. While the Browns’ quarterback competition will continue, Berry would give a rough timeline on when the team will figure out a winner, though it’s one that fans will be annoyed about.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Berry would say that he feels “confident” that a starting quarterback will be named before Week 1 of the regular season on Sept. 13 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to Mary Kay Cabot. It’s likely that when fans read this update from Berry, they’ll all say in unison, “Duh.”

However, there is a good point to be made that Berry could have said it sarcastically, since the question around the quarterback battle between Watson and Sanders is brought up every time and is the biggest storyline surrounding the team.

Berry would continue talking about the Browns’ quarterback room, with the general manager answering the question of why Cleveland wouldn’t start the younger option if both are at the same level.

“I wouldn’t rule anything out in terms of the whole quarterback of the future discussion. Ultimately, we’re going to play the player who is the most productive on the field. … I think Deshaun (Watson’s) only 30. So there’s no need to make any decisions about the future right now. And we’ll let it play out,” Berry said, via Kay Cabot.

Watson hasn’t logged a snap in an NFL game since the 2024 season, as he looks to come back and start for Cleveland, though Sanders is his main source of competition. Last season in his rookie year, Sanders threw for 1,400 yards to go along with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions in eight games, as it remains to be seen which player ends up as the starting quarterback and when the team will come to that conclusion.
