4 Cowboys players who stole the show at 1st training camp practice

Training camp is underway as the Dallas Cowboys prepare for the upcoming 2026-27 season. While expectations are high for the stars and the team in general, Brian Schottenheimer took the time to name four individuals who stole the show during the team’s first practice.

While talking with media members, the 52-year-old head coach claimed that quarterback Joe Milton, running back Jaydon Blue, edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku, and safety Jalen Thompson shined the brightest at Thursday’s practice, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. Specifics were not shared, but those players seemed to have impressed Schottenheimer and the coaching staff.

“Some Cowboys who stood out in the first training camp practice, according to Brian Schottenheimer: Joe Milton, Jaydon Blue, Donovan Ezeiruaku, Jalen Thompson,” Machota reported.

Milton is in contention for the backup quarterback job behind Dak Prescott. The former sixth-round pick is competing with Sam Howell for the QB2 role. Joe Milton joined the Cowboys last season and appeared in four games for the club.

As for Blue, the soon-to-be second-year pro hopes for a more prominent role in the backfield. He didn’t see much action in his rookie year due to Javonte Williams emerging as a consistent option in the running game. But Jaydon Blue has the tools to serve as a nice change-of-pace back in Dallas.

Ezeiruaku is also coming off a rookie season, but was much more productive as a former second-round pick. He’s slated for a starting role as an outside linebacker and should primarily work as an edge rusher attacking opposing quarterbacks. His development is a big part of the Cowboys’ plans to improve the defense for the 2026-27 campaign.

Lastly, Thompson is entering his eighth season in the NFL after playing his first seven with the Arizona Cardinals. He’s been a consistent starter through most of his career and will maintain that role after signing a three-year, $33 million contract ($22 million guaranteed) with Dallas this offseason.
