NBA rumors: Timberwolves insider urges Bulls front-office reunion after firings

The Chicago Bulls cleaned house on Monday night, relieving president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley of their duties. This duo took over prior to the start of the 2020-21 season, representing a change from the former duo of Gar Forman and John Paxson.

However, not much has changed for the Bulls since then, and in fact, after six seasons at the helm, one could argue that the team is in a worse spot than they were in before Karnisovas and Eversley took over. Now, the Bulls have a major front-office opening, and they have to get it right as the franchise is at a crossroads amid growing fan discontent.

One possibility for the Bulls is to bring back an old face — but not the infamous GarPax duo. As Minnesota Timberwolves insider Jon Krawczynski pointed out, a possibility for Chicago is to reunite with Timberwolves general manager Matt Lloyd, who began his executive career as a PR intern before making his way to the front office.

Lloyd began his tenure with the Timberwolves as their senior VP of basketball operations before being promoted to general manager in 2024. He was a chief decision-maker in the trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo.

Taking on a rebuild will be a challenge for Lloyd, but as someone who’s well-regarded in the league, he could very well have a plan in place to get the Bulls out of the depths — something that Karnisovas and company weren’t able to do during their time with the franchise.

The Bulls, as presently constructed, look directionless, and they make a habit of taking on former lottery picks whose stocks have depreciated — for good reason, one might add. The Jaden Ivey trade appears to be the final straw, especially in light of recent events, and Chicago needs an infusion of bright ideas from an up-and-coming executive’s mind. Could Lloyd be the man for the job?
