Warriors rumors: Why a Klay Thompson return this offseason isn’t happening

The Golden State Warriors have had a painfully uneventful offseason, with their only notable moves being bringing back Draymond Green and Kristaps Porzingis on new deals. The Warriors are poised to run back the same roster that won just 37 games a year ago and exited in the play-in round for the second time in three years.

Some have wondered if a reunion with future Hall of Famer Klay Thompson might be on the horizon for the team this summer, but recently, cold water was dumped on this by ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel.

“A reunion between Klay and the Warriors could only happen if he were to become a free agent, and that’s not by way of buyout. We’re talking next offseason, next summer, where the Warriors aren’t a first apron team or a second apron team. If he gets bought out of his contract now, the Warriors cannot sign him due to the CBA rules,” said Siegel, per ClutchPoints on X, formerly Twitter.

While Thompson is no longer the same player he was during his prime years with the Warriors during their dynastic run, he is still an elite shooter who can provide occasional secondary playmaking on the perimeter, having spent two years with the Dallas Mavericks since departing Golden State in 2024.

Numerous teams are interested in pursuing Thompson this offseason in order to add more firepower, but a potential reunion with Stephen Curry and friends looks like it will have to wait.

At this point, options are dwindling for the Warriors in terms of adding to the team for next season, with most eyes already set on the summer of 2027, when the team will have much more flexibility to work with.
