Former Broncos CB is latest to make college pivot after transfer portal move

The Denver Broncos now became linked to the College Football Transfer Portal. This coming amid TJ Harden leaving the Seattle Seahawks to re-enter college, and Jack Pyburn of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers joining the growing list. Now cornerback Blake Cotton from Utah football makes the collegiate pivot.

Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports revealed the latest portal decision Thursday. Although his Broncos run ended way earlier via head coach Sean Payton and the front office. Cotton got waived to start the month of August with an injury settlement.

So now Cotton adds to the inflating list of undrafted rookies taking advantage of a landmark decision involving the NCAA.

A Louisiana judge granted players to file TROs (Temporary Restraining Orders) toward the NCAA thanks to the fifth-year eligibility rule. This particular rule impacts players who graduated from high school in 2022, allowing them to gain an extra year. Now the restraining order allows players to seek a new college home to carry out their fifth season.

Cotton emerged as one of the final standout defenders of the Kyle Whittingham era in Salt Lake City. Whittingham briefly retired from head coaching before accepting the head coaching job at Michigan during the offseason. Cotton cracked the starting lineup eight times for the Utes, responding with 30 tackles and breaking up seven passes.

Cotton suited up for UC Davis from 2022 to 2024, grabbing 49 tackles and swatting the ball nine times. So he’s familiar with the portal.  But now comes which defense will take him in with Week 0 of the CFB season on the horizon.
