How Browns tight end is still able to enter transfer portal
With the Cleveland Browns in the midst of practice in preparation for the 2026 NFL season, there is one player on the team who is taking the opportunity to go back to the college football level. As the Browns’ outlook for the 2026 season has been one that fans are trying to figure out, this newest component adds another layer to a busy offseason.
According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, Cleveland tight end Dae’Quan Wright is deciding to enter the transfer portal, as he played the last two seasons with the Ole Miss football program.
“Cleveland Browns tight end Dae’Quan Wright has entered the college transfer portal, [Chris Hummer] and I have learned. The former Ole Miss star is currently on the Browns’ roster,” Zenitz wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

If there’s one thing for certain, anyone reading that is probably perplexed as to how that could be a reality, but it all comes down to a recent lawsuit where a federal judge gave some former college players a “temporary restraining order.”
“A group of former college football players who filed a lawsuit against the NCAA in Louisiana was granted a temporary restraining order by a federal judge that allows them to enter the transfer portal even though some are currently on NFL rosters,” Nick Bromberg of Yahoo Sports wrote.
“The TRO was granted Wednesday and follows a recent ruling by a judge in Colorado that granted players from the high school class of 2022 a fifth season of eligibility,” Bromberg continued. “The NCAA, which is appealing the Colorado decision, announced earlier this year that college athletes now have a five-year eligibility clock. However, athletes from the class whose last year of eligibility was during the 2025-26 school year were not given a fifth year.”
At any rate, it remains to be seen what the next step for Wright is, as this is an unprecedented event, with the undrafted NFL rookie being the first professional player to enter the transfer portal.
