Colts’ Keenan Allen reveals secret to finding success late in NFL career

There are not many wide receivers in the NFL who know their own game better than Keenan Allen, who is now a member of the Indianapolis Colts. This pairing is a match that makes a ton of sense, with head coach Shane Steichen being a longtime offensive coach of Allen with the Chargers in San Diego and Los Angeles.

Philip Rivers, Allen’s longtime quarterback, returned in stunning fashion in 2025, making history as one of the first QB’s his age to ever do that. The only reason he was able to do that was due to Steichen’s playbook. A playbook Rivers used his entire professional career. Allen will now do the same as Rivers and join a team where he only needs to learn personnel movements within the playbook.

Allen enters Year 14 with not many chances left to make a deep playoff run. That has been something that has escaped him his entire career. A healthy Colts team proved last year that they are legit. The 34-year-old route-running star can seriously contribute.

He helped explain why on Thursday when he joined The Pat McAfee Show to talk with the former Colts punter.

“I’ve just been playing my game,” Allen said. I’ve never been the guy to blow the top off. I haven’t lost any speed in that department because I didn’t have any to lose.”

Allen is going to be a primary target on third down. His route running creates separation even without a speed factor. This style has allowed him to play deep into his career, despite brutal injuries early.

With the injuries the team is dealing with right now, there is no better time to bring in Allen. Depending on how Alec Pierce’s injury recovers, the Colts could entertain bringing in another veteran receiver.
