Oklahoma football, Brent Venables agree to huge 6-year contract extension

The Oklahoma football program is currently gearing up for the new 2026 college football season, which is slated to get underway in less than a month. The Sooners are coming off an impressive 2025 season that saw them make the College Football Playoff thanks to its expanded format.

On Thursday, the team made a big commitment to head coach Brent Venables moving forward.

“Sources: Oklahoma and coach Brent Venables have agreed to a new 6-year contract that averages $10.5 million per year. It adds two years to the current deal and goes through 2031. Venables led Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff in 2025, OU’s first CFP since 2019,” reported college football insider Pete Thamel of ESPN on X, formerly Twitter.

Venables has long been regarded as one of the top college football coaches in the landscape, and now, the Sooners have committed to keeping him around over the long haul. Venables has been impressive in leading Oklahoma back into a respectable place in the sport, making the playoff last year thanks in large part to their upset win over the Alabama Crimson Tide on the road during the regular season.

Unfortunately, that success did not carry over into the postseason, as Oklahoma was demolished by Alabama in a rematch, but it was still an impressive enough season to convince the Oklahoma brass to keep Venables around for the long-term future.

Oklahoma is slated to get its new 2026 college football season underway on September 4 with a home game against UTEP, with kickoff set for 8:00 pm ET.
