Giants’ Brian Burns’ casual flex after Dolphins joint practice is scary for rest of NFL

The NFL got a jolt when John Harbaugh became the new coach for the New York Giants. After a joint practice with the Miami Dolphins, Brian Burns had a casual flex that should be scary to the rest of the league, according to Giants beat writer Jordan Raaman.

Burns explained that while the New York defense was dominant, there was potential for so much more. While many were talking about Jaxson Dart, Burns believes the defense can be something special.

Kayvon Thibodeau is one of the most tenured players on the defense and is in a contract year. Ultimately, there could be more motivation after he notched just 2.5 sacks last season. Meanwhile, Burns led the Giants with 16.5 sacks. There was a steep drop-off from him, as Abdul Carter had four. But there have been some changes.

The Giants added Tremaine Edmunds to their roster, solidifying the middle of their defense, which struggled at times. Last season, the run defense was 31st in the league, with 145.3 rushing yards allowed, while the pass defense was 20th with 217.8 passing yards per game. The Giants were 28th in total defense, and 26th in total points allowed.

The Giants also drafted Arvell Reese, who was one of the best players available. Notably, he delivered with 6.5 sacks, 69 total tackles, and 34 solo tackles in 14 games for Ohio State in 2025. This pick gives the Giants another possible weapon who can significantly improve their defense. If Burns’ prediction is correct, then the Giants’ defense could certainly make an impact this season and surprise some people.
