Chiefs’ Andy Reid reveals extended Justin Field preseason plan with Patrick Mahomes still out

Patrick Mahomes has been cleared to partake in 11-on-11 action, and the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is slated to start Week 1 of the regular season. However, the Chiefs are taking precautions with their superstar, who suffered a torn ACL last December. So far, the Chiefs have held him out of preseason action, and that will continue in their upcoming matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Justin Fields was traded for in the offseason to serve as the bridge until Mahomes is ready to go, and he will be getting the start in Kansas City’s second exhibition game. Nate Taylor reported that Andy Reid said that Fields will play into the second quarter.

From there, Garrett Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun will see action. While Mahomes has established himself as one of the best players in the NFL, Fields has taken on a bust label since being drafted 11th overall in 2021. The Chiefs are the fourth team that he has played for, but even though he has struggled to throw the football, Fields’ limited time on the field did result in him becoming an all-time great rushing QB.

Nussmeier is a rookie seventh-rounder who once was seen as a first-round prospect. Oladokun has spent most of his time on the Chiefs’ practice squad, but he did start two games for Kansas City last season.

In addition to Mahomes sitting out, Trey Smith, Josh Simmons, and Ashton Gillotte won’t play against the Buccaneers. Health was a big problem for the Chiefs last year, and they are clearly prioritizing being full steam ahead come the regular season.
