Knicks rumors: NY insider reveals $62 million Josh Hart projections

The New York Knicks could soon face another major financial decision involving one of the most important pieces of their championship core.

As New York prepares to defend its NBA championship during the 2026-27 season, The Athletic’s James L. Edwards III revealed projections for a potential Josh Hart contract extension that could reach $62 million over three years.

Edwards reported Thursday that one league source viewed a three-year deal worth between $54 million and $62 million as a reasonable outcome for both sides.

“In talking to one league source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak freely, he believes a three-year extension worth somewhere between $54 and $62 million would be a happy medium for both sides.”

Such an agreement would provide Hart with guaranteed money through his mid-30s while keeping his annual salary relatively close to his current compensation.

Another league source placed Hart’s potential extension near the top of that range.

“Another league source, who also spoke under the same conditions, thought a three-year extension worth $60-62 million in total would be the sweet spot.”

“A guaranteed three years would reward Hart for his services to date and what’s to come, while staying in the low $20s annually could give the franchise flexibility.”

Josh Hart remains key piece of Knicks’ championship core

Hart’s value to the Knicks extends beyond traditional scoring. The 31-year-old averaged 12.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game during the 2025-26 regular season while shooting 50.8% from the field and 41.3% from 3-point range. He appeared in 66 games, making 52 starts and averaging 30.2 minutes.

His versatility, rebounding and ability to fill several roles helped New York capture its first NBA championship since 1973.

The Knicks will now attempt to keep Hart alongside a championship core featuring Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges as New York looks to defend its title.

New York begins its title defense Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. ET on NBC against a star-studded Philadelphia 76ers roster featuring LeBron James and Jaylen Brown at Madison Square Garden. With another championship run approaching, a potential Hart extension could provide additional long-term stability for a team seeking to repeat.
