Dan Campbell reveals Lions’ QB plan for Commanders preseason game as QB2 battle rages

The Detroit Lions are currently gearing up for their second preseason game on Saturday afternoon against the Washington Commanders. The Lions are not expected to play their starters much, if at all, for the rest of the preseason, and one of the biggest question marks left on the depth chart is the backup quarterback position.

Both Josh Dobbs and Luke Altmyer are vying for the backup QB role behind Jared Goff, and now, head coach Dan Campbell has revealed his plan regarding the position for Saturday’s game against Washington.

“No Goff for this game. Dobbs will start, split reps equally with Altmyer. Campbell said the backup competition is still open for the No. 2 spot behind Goff,” reported Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network on X, formerly Twitter.

Dobbs is an NFL veteran who has shown the ability to lead effective offenses at times during his career, while Altmyer was signed by the Lions after going undrafted this past NFL Draft out of Illinois, having previously spent time with the Ole Miss Rebels college football program.

The Lions are hoping that the backup QB battle ends up being an inconsequential one in the long run, as Goff looks to continue his impressive track record of good health throughout his career. Detroit is looking for a bounce-back year in 2026 after missing the playoffs altogether last season, with Campbell’s foray into offensive playcalling proving to be largely a disaster.

Still, having a good plan in place at backup quarterback will help ease everyone’s mind going into the new season.

The Lions’ preseason game against the Commanders is slated to get underway on Saturday at 12:00 pm ET from Detroit.
