Lions HC Dan Campbell’s cryptic Sam LaPorta injury update brings Week 1 concern
The Detroit Lions are currently taking part in training camp as they gear up for the new 2026 NFL season. The Lions have been dealing with some injury concerns during training camp, including a recent hip injury sustained by star tight end Sam LaPorta.
Now, Lions head coach Dan Campbell has revealed the latest on the ailment, and it wasn’t exactly an encouraging update for the star’s status moving forward.
“#Lions TE Sam LaPorta got hit in the hip the other day and team is resting him, according to Dan Campbell. It’s unclear if this injury will carry over into Week 1,” reported Eric Woodyard of ESPN on X, formerly Twitter.
“I feel like we’ll be OK, but I don’t know,” Campbell said.
It’s certainly not what Lions fans were hoping to hear about one of the most important players on the team’s offense. LaPorta’s combination of speed, size, and elite hands has made him a terror for opposing defenses over the last couple of seasons, and his willingness to block has also made an enormous impact on the Lions’ offensive success as a whole.
While this injury doesn’t seem to be something that could impact his entire season, and the Lions do have a theoretically easy matchup in Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints, the team will still be hoping that LaPorta recovers from the injury sooner rather than later.
In any case, the Lions will next take the field on Saturday for a preseason game at home against the Washington Commanders at 12:00 pm ET.
