Diamondbacks President/CEO baffled by ‘bizarre’ Ketel Marte ‘mystery’ that all but seals fate in Arizona

The Arizona Diamondbacks are still looking for answers from Ketel Marte. Marte did not show up for the Diamondbacks’ game against the Boston Red Sox and was placed on the restricted list.

Now, Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall is speaking out about the situation, according to Alex Weiner.

“Still a complete mystery, it’s just bizarre,” Hall said.

It is still not fully known why Marte did not return to the club. A statement from his agent gave some insight.

“Ketel appreciates the unwavering support from fans, teammates, the Diamondbacks organization, and Torey Lovullo during this time,” his agent said. “He remains optimistic about his recovery and looks forward to returning to the field to contribute to the team as soon as possible.”

Marte has played in 118 games this year for the Diamondbacks, hitting .249 with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs. He was scheduled to get an MRI on Tuesday, but has not reported for that either.

“Any player who has a responsibility to be at the ballpark needs to be there, unless it’s been prearranged,” Hall added. “If a player’s hurt, well,  then they need to go in and get treatment. We’re not sure what it is. That’s why we want to hear what the results of the MRI are right away. Still, we need to know if you were feeling sore, if you were hurting, why didn’t you go in and get treatment? That’s what you do.

“Personally, I’m disappointed that a player didn’t show up and go where he was supposed to. But I can get past it if I can hear a reason why. We’re all sort of sparing judgment because we don’t know yet what the explanation is.”

The Diamondbacks are 67-61 on the season, which places them in third in the NL West and ten games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. They are also just a game behind the San Diego Padres for the final wild card spot in the National League. The Diamondbacks begin a series with the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
