Cardinals get gift from heavens with embarrassing Reds gaffe on play that would’ve ended game
If both the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds were comfortably in postseason position, this contest would be in contention for one of the craziest games of the year. However, with both teams likely to miss the playoffs, this game will be forgotten fairly soon.
The Cardinals caught a massive break when Reds’ outfielder Dane Myers dropped a fly ball that would have ended the game.

The Cardinals would score six runs in the inning and would end up winning the game 10-9. Up 5-4, the Reds should have earned a win against a division rival, but instead lost another game in what has been a disappointing season after making the playoffs in 2025.
Seeing an error happen when the game should have ended is tough to overcome. Seeing another four runs added on is even tougher — all with two outs in the inning.
The Reds did not quit as they would score four runs in the bottom of the 9th to try and tie the game and create even more chaos. The Reds have a very powerful offense, but the pitching has been a disaster this season. Even though they should have won, the poor pitching is a huge reason why they lost. There aren’t many pitchers on the staff who are reliable in big moments.
The Cardinals are now 2.5 games back of the final Wild Card spot in the National League. As for the Reds, they are seven games back. They would need one of the biggest miracles in the sport to make the postseason.
If the Cardinals sneak in, then they may look back on this moment as what helped get them there.
