Falcons’ Michael Penix Jr. gets honest on final hurdle in recovery from ACL injury
Michael Penix has torn his ACL three times. The brutal knee injury occurred on two separate occasions in college at Indiana before the quarterback transferred to Washington. More recently, the former first-rounder tore his ACL with the Atlanta Falcons last season. That injury has Penix still limited in what he can do on the football field as training camp is underway.
Penix hasn’t been cleared for full-contact 11-on-11 action yet. He’s instead been limited to individual drills and 7-on-7 action. Tua Tagovailoa, meanwhile, has served as the Falcons’ starting QB. Both signal callers are left-handed and have had up-and-down careers to this point. While Tagovailoa seems slated to start Week 1 because of Penix’s injury, it is possible that the Washington product could take his spot back upon his return.
Penix has full confidence in his skill set and ability to operate as a quarterback. It is the contact part of football that is holding him back as of now.
“If i had a rush coming at me, I can get away,” Penix said. “It’s just, if I don’t get away, that’s what we’re thinking about right now, if I don’t get away. I don’t think my doctor is ready for me to take those hits right now, but that time is coming real soon.”
The Falcons have to be cautious with Penix’s health, considering his injury history. The last thing they can afford is for their former high draft pick to suffer another devastating injury. They want Penix back sooner rather than later, though, and a return seems to be imminent.
