NBA rumors: The trade reason Kings’ continued interest in Jonathan Kuminga is going nowhere

Jonathan Kuminga is arguably the most sought-after free agency acquisition remaining on the market this offseason, and multiple teams have expressed interest in the former Atlanta Hawks man. Among the barrage of interested teams operating under strict financial conditions are the Sacramento Kings, but there are obvious reasons why there have been no developments with respect to the move.

Per ESPN, despite holding a clear interest in Kuminga’s signature, any sign-and-trade deal that they manage to negotiate with the Hawks will leave them hard-capped at the first apron. Further, in the absence of a sign-and-trade, Sacramento can only offer a minimum contract, something Kuminga is obviously not looking for.

The 23-year-old appears to be playing the same kind of waiting game that earned him a two-year, $48.5 million extension from the Golden State Warriors in restricted free agency back in September 2025. The Lakers have reportedly had a $20 million, two-year deal rejected, and Kuminga has no intention of signing a three-year deal at a value he deems less than what he deserves.

However, any sign-and-trade deal must also include at least a three-year contract under NBA rules, which adds another obstacle to Sacramento’s pursuit. Meanwhile, several contenders continue to explore avenues to acquire Kuminga, although salary cap restrictions have complicated nearly every discussion.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers remain the teams most actively pursuing sign-and-trade possibilities, while the Minnesota Timberwolves alongside the Kings have also maintained interest. While the Lakers remain the frontrunners and have reportedly offered a $45 million, three-year deal alongside a sign-and-trade framework that sends Jarred Vanderbilt to the Hawks in addition to draft compensation, the contract length and valuation continue to be the biggest stumbling blocks.

Kuminga and his camp once again appear to be patient and look set to hold out for a bigger contract despite the Lakers’ offer being on the table. The expectation may also be that a new team with the financial means to better those offers joins the race in the coming time. In such a scenario, it appears highly unlikely that the former Warriors man would even consider the kind of minimum contract that the Kings can offer in the absence of a sign-and-trade arrangement.

Hence, as things stand, the Lakers appear to be the frontrunners simply because they are in a position to offer the biggest contract, but Kuminga appears set to take his time as he considers his options.
