Spider-Man: Brand New Day star finally addresses that final shocking scene

Those who have seen the new MCU movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day know that the ending is a mic drop, and one of the actors in the scene has broken his silence on it.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Jacob Batalon, who plays Ned, Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) best friend, broke down the final scene. In the closing moments, Peter attempts his iconic handshake with Ned, who still doesn’t remember him, thanks to Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) spell from No Way Home. He ends up following Peter’s lead before saying his name, indicating that the spell might’ve worn off on Ned.

Batalon noted that the scene “seems a little open-ended,” acknowledging the theories that it’s “just muscle memory.” He conceded that it’s possible Ned “remembers that handshake but nothing else about Peter” and only says his name because he’s repeating what Holland’s character said.

“I feel like it’s really up to interpretation for everyone,” Batalon said. “There could be a slight glint or little glimmer [of recognition], if you will.”

What does the Spider-Man: Brand New Day ending mean?

The ending of Brand New Day suggests that Ned is finally remembering Peter. However, they could always pull the rug from under everyone if he is just copying Peter’s movements and repeating his name.

Either way, fans will likely have to wait until a fifth Spider-Man MCU movie to find out what happens next. MJ is also shown crying while frozen by Jean Grey (Sadie Sink) in the third act. She is later at her high school on the rooftop where she used to escape with Peter, holding the black dahlia necklace he gave her in Far From Home.

Spider-Man might be seen again before a fifth movie, though. There is a chance that he shows up in one or both of the next Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars. However, it’s unlikely Ned or MJ will have prominent roles in either movie.
