Sophie Cunningham wants focus to strictly return to basketball

The Indiana Fever are currently 19-11 and in a close race for playoff positioning as the WNBA approaches the final months of the regular season. And if Fever wing Sophie Cunningham had her way, that’s exactly what the media and outside focus would be on as the postseason draws near.

“The WNBA media, all we ever do is cover everything expect basketball. It’s like, what are we doing, there’s so much. You can talk about other things, I think those are great stories, it shows fans who people are outside of the court,” Cunningham said. “But I also think we got to keep the main thing, the main thing … for me I want to get back to basketball. It’s always been about basketball … for me I just want to make sure the focus stays where it should because people are playing at such a high level.”

In that sense, the Fever certainly have plenty to speak about regarding their play on the court. Their All-Star backcourt of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, are having MVP caliber seasons. Clark is coming off her third Player of the Week Award while Mitchell received the Player of the Month Award.

And as far as Sophie Cunningham goes, she’s been an integral part of the Fever’s success this season as a key reserve. She’s appeared in 29 games, including three starts, at a little over 23 minutes per game. She’s averaging 9.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists with splits of 48.2 percent shooting from the field, 45.2 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 88.5 percent shooting from the free-throw line
