Steve Madden speaks about his support of HBCUs

Fashion designer Steve Madden is doubling down on his commitment to supporting HBCUs. During a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Madden reflected on his work with Howard University and Clark Atlanta University, explaining that he believes HBCUs deserve greater attention and investment.

Asked by Charlamagne tha God about his relationship with Howard University, Madden pointed to the company’s ongoing initiatives with the institution.

“We do a lot of work with Howard… We have big programs, intern programs, fashion programs,” Madden said.

Madden also confirmed that his company previously partnered with Clark Atlanta University.

“We did something with Clark… Yeah. Amazing. Yeah, it was great. You know, it’s just something that I wanna do,” he said.

According to information provided by Steve Madden, the company’s partnership with Howard University includes its multi-year “Celebrating Fashion’s Future” initiative in collaboration with the Howard University School of Business and the Black Retail Action Group (BRAG).

The program gives students hands-on experience through retail and brand strategy bootcamps, capstone projects and immersive learning opportunities in New York City. Madden has also participated in entrepreneurship-focused discussions on Howard’s campus and the company maintains a curated Howard University apparel collection on its website.

At Clark Atlanta University, Madden has partnered with the Fearless Fund to mentor students and participate in entrepreneurship programming. That collaboration also helped spark the company’s later partnership with Slutty Vegan founder Pinky Cole, resulting in a limited-edition footwear and accessories collection.

When asked what motivated him to become involved with HBCUs, Madden said there was no single defining moment. Instead, he credited the influence Black people have had throughout his life and said he believes HBCUs deserve more recognition.

“I’ve been very influenced by Black people in my life… I just feel like it’s an area that doesn’t get as much attention as it should. And it’s a wonderful thing, and I wish we could do more, to be honest with you,” Madden said.
