Cubs’ Kevin Gausman turns heads with honest Chicago-Toronto comparison

The Chicago Cubs swung a trade for veteran pitcher Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays at the MLB trade deadline. Chicago wanted to deepen its pitching staff for the stretch run ahead. Gausman has immense experience that can help this team. And it seems he’s already taken a liking to his new city.

Gausman spoke with reporters ahead of Chicago’s series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. He was asked about the differences between Chicago and Toronto. He gave a rather straightforward and honest answer.

“It’s the first time my wife’s been here and, after the first day, she said, ‘It’s so different than Toronto.’ I was like, yeah, the focus is baseball. It’s real grass, it’s outside,” the new Cubs starter said, via Marquee Sports Network.

Some could see this as shade toward the Blue Jays following the trade. At the same time, it could be a nod toward Toronto’s, and Canada’s by extension, cultural focus on the NHL and the game of hockey.

Either way, Gausman found success with the Blue Jays and hopes to bring that to the Cubs. He helped Toronto win the American League pennant last season. This year, he has pitched to a 4.38 ERA and 127 strikeouts to go along with a 5-10 record.

The Cubs swept the Dodgers on Wednesday and now sit 66-49 on the season. This is a big result and gives them a lot of momentum, but there remains a ton of baseball left to be played. The Cubs will take on the Blue Jays on Thursday for a makeup game before taking on the Kansas City Royals to begin a three-game set on Friday.
