Nationals stay below .500 with Reds loss, continuing impossible stat
The Washington Nationals made unpleasant history after the Cincinnati Reds dismantled them in a 15-1 blowout on Thursday evening.
Going the game, Washington secured the series win after winning Game 1 by a 10-4 score and Game 2 by an 8-7 score. They looked to complete the three-game sweep on the road, needing momentum as they shake off a slow start to the season.
However, the Reds had other plans. Cincinnati torched Washington on the defensive side of the ball by shutting them out for the first seven innings. The Nationals finally scored in the eighth frame, but that was the only run they got as Cincinnati coasted to victory. As a result, reporter Spencer Nusbaum noted how the team has been unable to get back to a .500 win percentage with this loss.
“For the 15th time in the last two years (since 5/15/24) the Nationals were one win away from being a .500 club. They have now lost all 15 of those games,” Nusbaum wrote.
How Nationals played against Reds
The Nationals will leave Cincinnati with a better taste in their mouth after suffering a blowout in the series finale. Despite that, they still come out of it by two wins and one loss throughout the three-game set.
Cincinnati jumped out to an 11-0 lead in seven innings and never looked back. Washington had 30 at-bats to attempt finding chances to score but only mustered up three hits throughout the whole contest.
Washington fell to a 21-23 record on the season, holding the second spot in the NL East Division standings. They are above the Philadelphia Phillies and the Miami Marlins while trailing the Atlanta Braves.
The Nationals will look to bounce back as they prepare for their next series at home. They host the Baltimore Orioles as Game 1 takes place on May 15 at 6:45 p.m. ET.
