Michigan basketball rumors: Billy Donovan listed on Pete Nakos’ initial Hot Board to replace Dusty May

Michigan is coming off a national championship in 2025-26. Now, their head coaching job is open as Dusty May is moving on to coach the Dallas Mavericks next season.

Now, the question becomes who will be coaching the Wolverines in 2026-27, and Pete Nakos of On3 has a big board for options.

The first option Nakos gives is current Michigan assistant and a former head coach, Mike Boynton.

“The former Oklahoma State head coach has spent two seasons on May’s coaching staff at Michigan. A former point guard at South Carolina, Boynton has served as the program’s defensive coordinator the last two years. During his seven seasons at Oklahoma State, Boynton led the Cowboys to a 119-109 record, including a trip to the 2021 NCAA Tournament and two NIT quarterfinal appearances in 2018 and 2023. He had three 20-plus win seasons. Michigan could promote Boynton to head coach or name him interim head coach for the 2026-27 season as it conducts a national coaching search,” Nakos wrote.

Nakos also provides the guy who is possibly the biggest name available on the market, Billy Donovan.

“Donovan would immediately be viewed as one of — if not the — top coach in the sport. He won back-to-back national titles at Florida, while compiling a 467–186 record and four Final Four appearances. Could Donovan head to Ann Arbor and keep Boynton on staff in hopes of keeping the roster intact,” the article continued.

While Donovan would be a great hire, he may not take the job. If Michigan wants to go external and cannot get Donovan, John Schertz from Saint Louis could be an option.

“If the Michigan job opening was in April 2027, he would be a top name on the board. But the timing of May’s departure makes it a different coaching search. Keeping the roster intact is the top priority for Michigan, and Schertz leaving Saint Louis at this juncture also might not be appealing. However, he’s a proven winner at every step of his coaching career,” Nakos continued.

Regardless of who the coach is, the new coach at Michigan will also need to keep players from hitting the transfer portal, which will open five days after a new coach is announced.
