Zach Neto just accomplished feat that hasn’t ever been seen before in Angels history

The Los Angeles Angels embraced a rebuild at the trade deadline and sold off a number of major league talents. However, the franchise decided to hold onto shortstop Zach Neto.

On Thursday, Neto etched his name into the Angels’ history books forever. His third inning home run against the Baltimore Orioles marked his 20th of the year. He is now the first Angels shortstop to have three-straight, 20 home run, 20 double seasons, via Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com.

Neto isn’t set to hit free agency until 2030. While that control would’ve earned Los Angeles quite the haul on the trade market, the Angels – at least in the moment – prefer to keep Neto stationed at short. Based on his performance at the major league level, it’s not too surprising to see Los Angeles so high on the shortstop.

In the midst of Thursday’s matchup, Neto is hitting .231 with 20 home runs, 59 RBIs and 14 stolen bases over 112 games. Overall, the shortstop has hit .243 with 78 home runs, 223 RBIs and 75 stolen bases over his four years with the franchise.

The Angels are preparing to enter a new era of their franchise. Absent from the playoffs since 2014, Los Angeles knows they have to try something different. Not everyone was sold off – see Neto and Mike Trout. However, the team is now ready to work towards building a better future.

As it stands, Neto seems poised to be a key figure in that future LA is attempting to create. The shortstop has already proven to be one of the more powerful players at the position in franchise history.
