How Francisco Lindor can convince Mets they have reason to believe

The New York Mets have had a disastrous 2026 MLB season, currently sitting at 49-66 as they wrap up a series with the Cleveland Guardians. The Mets recently held somewhat of a fire sale at the trade deadline, trading several key players, including Freddy Peralta, in a clear concession of this season as a lost cause.

Still, recently, Mets insider Anthony DiComo of MLB.com broke down why New York fans shouldn’t completely abandon ship down the stretch of this season.

“If the Mets go 38-9 over their final 47 games, including today, they’ll probably make the playoffs. Hey, it’s been done! Five times in fact, most recently by Francisco Lindor, Jay Bruce and the 2017 Guardians,” reported DiComo on X, formerly Twitter.

Lindor, of course, is now a member of the Mets, where he was ultimately not traded at the deadline despite rampant speculation leading up to this past Monday. Lindor has been a superstar for the Mets for quite some time now, and has continued to play well this season since returning from an injury.

At this point, fans likely aren’t going to bank on the Mets going 38-9 to close out the season considering what they’ve seen so far, but stranger things have happened. New York rode a late-season surge all the way to the NLCS two years ago, although they weren’t nearly as far behind the eight ball in that season as they are at the current juncture.

In any case, following the conclusion of the Guardians series, the Mets will next take the field on Friday evening on the road for a weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
