Patriots’ Mike Vrabel makes eye-opening decision with Will Campbell out of practice

The New England Patriots have begun NFL Training camp, and Will Campbell has already made an impact. But with Campbell out of practice, Pats coach Mike Vrabel made an eye-opening decision, according to Patriots beat writer Chad Graff.

“Without Will Campbell on the field today, it was Marcus Bryant — not Caleb Lomu — who got the reps at left tackle with the Patriots’ starters,” Graff wrote on X. 

This is an interesting dilemma at tackle. Campbell is part of a young core that has done well to protect quarterback Drake Maye. Now, the battle behind him looks more competitive than ever.

The Patriots drafted Caleb Lomu to be an anchor on the line. However, it seems like he is not there yet. And the Pats seem to have the depth and ability to mix and match alongside their offensive line. Last season, New England’s offensive line was efficient and strong, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Pats came in at 11th in PFF’s ranking along the O-line last season. Additionally, they had the sixth-best pass-blocking efficiency. Campbell was a major part of that, along with Morgan Moses and Garrett Bradbury. With the NFL season around the corner, many see this unit as a top line in the NFL.

Campbell has increased his training in the offseason to improve his own skills and abilities. If they continue to develop and play consistently well, they could give Maye a lot of time in the pocket. If that happens, the Patriots will be a threat to return to the Super Bowl.
