Akron’s viral play-calling promotion that has everybody buzzing leads to first in program history
Offensive coordinators spend years working on their craft and working their way up the coaching chain. One day, they hope to call their own plays. For years, if you wanted to call plays for your favorite team, whether it be Akron, Alabama, or any of the 138 total FBS teams, you had to fire up your latest video game console and pop in EA Sports College Football.
Now, if you are a fan of the Akron Zips, you may be able to live out your dreams on the actual field because of a new promotion for season ticket holders, according to Front Office Sports.
One lucky season ticket holder will get the chance to call plays on the first offensive drive of the season for Akron. The promotion includes a pre-game press conference, being mic’d up with a headset and having a playsheet, while also hanging out in the coaches’ box.
“We were just going through the craziest ideas we could think of to sell football tickets,” Akron’s senior deputy AD Matt Pottorff said. “This was the one where we thought, ‘If we do this right, it could really move the needle and be a huge hit.’”
The promo did hit huge. For the first time in Akron football history, suites are completely sold out. Season tickets are still available elsewhere in the stadium.
“We’ve had an awesome, awesome 24 hours, but we’re just getting started,” Pottroff added. “It’s going to be like a tsunami.”
Pottroff also noted that the selection will be 100 percent random, but could not help make another plug for someone to buy a ton of season tickets.
“If somebody wants to buy 10,000 season tickets, they’ve got an incredibly good chance of winning,” the deputy AD added. Considering the stadium seats just 30,000, a one in three chance to be the offensive coordinator for a play or two could be worth it for someone.
There are more perks than just being able to call a play as well.
“First, we’re going to call that person NFL Draft–style and let them know that they got selected. Then we’ll find a time for them to come to campus, where they’ll meet with [head football] coach Joe Moorhead,” Pottorff said. “He’ll run them through what plays we would normally call in the opening drive, and then figure out what they want to do with it.”
While suites, which run as high as $15,000, are now sold out, Club and loge level season tickets are still available, but running low.
Meanwhile, general admission tickets at $75 each are available. Or a person could just pay the $70 for the latest copy of EA Sports College Football and enjoy calling plays from their couch.
