Embiid helped the 76ers, who were on the brink of elimination facing a 3-1 deficit in their first-round series against the Boston Celtics, to three wins in a row. He was critical for the Sixers, scoring 33 and 34 points in Games 5 and 7, but experienced health setbacks in Philadelphia’s second-round series against the Knicks. Joel, dealing with a right ankle sprain and hip soreness missed Game 4, as the Knicks finished off the Sixers in a sweep.

Before the NBA announces the 2026-27 regular-season schedule, 76ers fans will be excited for team’s first crack at the defending champion Knicks. 76ers’ Joel Embiid is back in the lab, which is an encouraging sign ahead of playing his first game with the most talented roster he’s been a part of.

With LeBron James’ arrival, the 76ers are positioned to challenge the Knicks, who lost their starting center in Mitchell Robinson, as ESPN’s Vincent Goodwill noted.

“In the wake of James’ decision — and with the NBA expected to release its full 2026-27 schedule later this month — ESPN spent the past week speaking with several executives, scouts and coaches about the matchups, schemes and stars that could decide Knicks-76ers: the team that knows itself versus the team learning something new every day,” Goodwill said.

“You have to approach this from scratch,” an East assistant coach said of Philadelphia’s approach to the season. “When you start playing, there’s certain things you can’t teach that you’ve learned over the years that are [instinctual] when you have a veteran or chemistry-laden team.”
