Mets make intriguing move on vet amid 5-game skid
The New York Mets began a six-game homestand with plenty of momentum after winning three straight on the road versus the San Francisco Giants, but they did not deliver their fans a product befitting of their roster talent and massive payroll. A 1-0 loss versus the Athletics on Sunday capped off a series sweep and extended the team’s losing streak to five games. The lineup produced two runs or less in four of those losses and were shut out twice. An offensive spark is urgently needed. Enter Tommy Pham.
The Mets (7-9) are calling up the veteran outfielder from St. Lucie, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic. Despite posting only a .167 batting average and .250 slugging percentage in 12 at-bats with the Single-A club, New York is trusting Pham’s experience, solid plate discipline and noted adaptability. He has played for 10 different MLB franchises and will now begin his second stint with New York (2023).
The 38-year-old right-handed hitter, who had an April 25 opt-out in his contract, will earn $2.2 million this season, per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. He owns a .256/.344/.422/.766 slash line with 149 home runs and 131 stolen bases in 1,241 regular season games. Pham cannot replace the injured Juan Soto or single-handedly inject new life into the clubhouse, but perhaps he can give the Mets productive plate appearances. New York is desperate.
This franchise must figure out how to make the playoffs after collapsing last year. A substantial amount of money is being invested in established stars like Soto, Francisco Lindor and Bo Bichette. They all have to perform up to their reputation, but other players like Jorge Polanco, Brett Baty and rookie Carson Benge will also have to come through on occasion. Tommy Pham can now be added to that group.
He will return to the Big Apple for the Mets’ upcoming series against the Los Angeles Dodgers (11-4).
