Malik Willis’ ‘man-to-man’ message sets tone for Dolphins before preseason

Malik Willis is already making his voice heard in Miami. The Dolphins quarterback’s latest message suggests leadership will be just as important as his arm and legs in 2026. Ahead of a training camp practice at Hard Rock Stadium, Willis called an offensive meeting and challenged his teammates to treat every rep with purpose rather than worrying about winning individual battles against Miami’s defense.

“I just wanted to talk to the offense and just have a man-to-man conversation,” Willis said.

He emphasized that players must take pride in their work and execute at the highest level. His message centered on learning offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik’s system instead of simply trying to “beat” the defense during practice. Willis stressed that the real objective is determining whether the offense executes the play as designed, regardless of the result of an individual down.

The message apparently resonated quickly, with offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor referencing Willis’ speech without being prompted after practice. That buy-in could prove valuable as Miami builds around a quarterback who is entering a new chapter of his career.

Willis was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He spent his first two seasons primarily as a backup before being traded to Green Bay in 2024. He showed significant efficiency with the Packers. That includes a 2025 campaign in which he completed 30 of 35 passes for 422 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 123 rushing yards and two scores. Miami signed Willis to a three-year, $67.5 million contract in March, including $45 million guaranteed. That’s after they released Tua Tagovailoa. Now, with a starting opportunity in South Beach, Willis is making clear that his standards begin long before Week 1.
