Steelers’ Drew Allar reveals what Aaron Rodgers is helping him improve in training camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback room is looking completely different this year, and rookie Drew Allar is taking full advantage of having a future Hall of Famer in the building. After a rocky start to training camp, the former Penn State standout is finally showing exactly why the team drafted him in the third round.

During the Steelers’ annual night practice at Latrobe Memorial Stadium, Allar turned heads by launching a series of impressive deep balls. The 76th overall pick connected with receivers DK Metcalf, Brandon Smith and tight end Robert Tonyan for massive gains during 7-on-7 drills, putting his elite arm strength on full display for the 8,499 fans in attendance.

Following the practice, a reporter asked Allar about his success pushing the ball down the field. The rookie credited his veteran mentor, Aaron Rodgers, for helping him make the necessary adjustments.

“Yeah, it felt really good, and it’s been something I’m working on in terms of the trajectory of the throw,” Allar told 93.7 The Fan. “I’m kind of picking Aaron’s brain on it maybe a week or so ago, so to be able to finally get the chance to do it in a live setting… I felt really good.”

Allar desperately needed a positive practice. Earlier in camp, a viral video showed him missing a practice net entirely during a quarterback drill, sparking intense debates among the fanbase about his footwork compared to fellow backup Mason Rudolph. Allar never truly unlocked his deep ball at Penn State, where he operated in an offense that rarely catered to his raw arm talent.

Now, he is actively learning from Rodgers. While Rodgers holds the undisputed starting job and looks sharp alongside newly acquired targets, Pittsburgh hopes its 22-year-old rookie can develop behind the scenes. If Allar continues dialing in his mechanics and trajectory with Rodgers’ guidance, he could easily secure the backup spot and prove he belongs in the NFL.
