Commanders rumors: Taylor Decker ties make him intriguing option to replace Laremy Tunsil

The Washington Commanders lost a key offensive starter early in training camp. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil suffered a torn triceps and is expected to miss a significant chunk of the regular season. Now the Commanders need to find a replacement for Tunsil who can keep their offense on track this fall.

Commanders insider John Keim tossed around the idea of former Lions left tackle Taylor Decker replacing Tunsil during a recent podcast episode.

“I think you would still want to go out and find more help at that position, at tackle” Keim said via The John Keim Report. “…Taylor Decker is a guy who played for Detroit, was very good for Detroit for 10 years. He asked for his release in March, he’s still unsigned. To my knowledge, he hasn’t retired. I think people feel like there’s still a little bit left there, I don’t know anything more than that with him.”

Keim did not report that Washington has interest in Decker. However, it is clear that he would be an excellent option to replace Tunsil at left tackle.

Decker has a few connections to the Commanders that might make him especially appealing. Decker spent a good deal of time with Commanders offensive coordinator David Blough while with the Lions. He also has familiarity with assistant general manager Lance Newmark from Detroit.

If the Commanders did bring in Decker, it may be to completely take over the left tackle position. At least until Tunsil gets back to full health.

“The only question I would have if they end up reaching out to [Decker] would be would he want to come here to challenge for a starting job or be a backup,” Keim added.

Washington could also rely on internal options, including Brandon Coleman, instead of brining in outside help. Still, the possibility of adding a trusty veteran like Decker has to be appealing to Washington’s front office.

It will be interesting to see if Washington kicks the tires on Decker later this week.
