Knicks’ Jalen Brunson reveals when he started to move on from celebrating title

There’s never ‘enough’ celebration after a team wins the NBA championship. And in the New York Knicks’ case, winning a trophy after 53 long years, the fanbase deserved to soak in the festivities as long as they wanted. However, franchise cornerstone Jalen Brunson recently laid out a completely different thought process on deciding when to “flip the switch.”

“Everyone talks about the emotion of winning it right when it happens. Right when, literally as the buzzer goes off, the rest of the evening, the celebration in the locker room, everything you hear about that. But no one tells you how long people could really celebrate for,” Brunson said on Things No One Tells You podcast with Lindsay Czarniak (h/t Tommy Beer).

“I think people don’t tell you that you have to find your own way to flip the switch, to figure out what comes next. You can’t just, unless you’re retiring, which I don’t plan on retiring. But we’ll be glad to hear that. But no one told you the time and day when to turn the switch and start focusing on the next one,” he added.

Well, probably for Brunson, the hope of retaining the championship is what comes next. Right after his Villanova days, when he won two NCAA National Championships in 2016 and 2018 with the Wildcats, expectations were always high. The left-handed point guard has been celebrated as someone getting his jersey retired in the prestigious MSG once he hangs up his sneakers.

However, things have not been the same lately after he underwent surgery on his wrist earlier last month. He had to get his tendons repaired after noticing it caused trouble every time he was shooting.

“I’ve been there for a while since when I had surgery; that’s when it clicked for me. It clicked for me that it was time to move on [from celebrating],” he further said.
