Brewers’ Pat Murphy addresses slump with eye-opening message to Milwaukee

The Milwaukee Brewers are among the best teams in baseball, but things have not been entirely sunshine and rainbows. The Brewers were swept by the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night. As a result, Pat Murphy’s team has dropped six of their last 11 games.

This is simply not the sort of form the Brewers expect from themselves. Milwaukee has seen its lead in the NL Central dwindle to three games, as the Chicago Cubs remain hot. After the game on Wednesday, the Brewers held a team meeting. Murphy came out of this meeting with a simple message to his players and fans.

“All I know is on August 12 we’ve got the best record in baseball. And if you got the best record in baseball you’re still going to go through times like this,” Murphy said, via Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Milwaukee received a rather strong effort from trade deadline pickup Dustin May. He went seven innings, striking out six hitters and allowing just one run. Unfortunately, the bullpen allowed the lead to slip. The Padres scored twice in the 11th inning to put the game to bed.

There is certainly still reason to believe in this Milwaukee team. They do hold the inside track for the NL Central Division crown. Additionally, they would still likely claim a Wild Card spot quite comfortably if they let the division slip. The playoffs are not in question.

At the same time, teams don’t want to go through these sorts of lulls, especially at this point in the season. The games only get harder from here, and that means they need to put their best foot forward on the diamond.

The Brewers will travel to Los Angeles for a three-game set with the Dodgers beginning on Thursday.
