'It used to annoy me' - Stuart Broad on Jadeja's sword celebration
Stuart Broad has offered his perspective on Ravindra Jadeja's distinctive sword celebration, the gesture the Indian all-rounder performs after significant batting moments. Broad, who faced Jadeja multiple times during his England career, reflected on how the celebration struck him during their encounters on the field.
Broad explained his initial reaction to Jadeja's animated batting celebrations. The former fast bowler recalled conversations he had with Jadeja about the timing and appropriateness of the gesture, particularly when celebrating half-centuries.
"His celebration used to annoy me a bit, like, what's this guy waving his bat around for a 50? I remember I used to say to him on a few occasions that batters actually average 50 and you are carrying on like this. It's flair, but I would have saved it for a hundred," Broad said while speaking on the For the Love of Cricket YouTube channel.
Why Broad found Jadeja's celebration frustrating
Jadeja's record against England underscores his value as a batter in international cricket. The 37-year-old Saurashtra all-rounder has accumulated three centuries and 11 fifties in Test matches against England, demonstrating consistent performance in the format. Across 373 international matches, Jadeja has amassed over 7,000 runs and taken 634 wickets, establishing himself as one of India's most complete players.
Despite Broad's reservations about the celebration itself, he acknowledged Jadeja's quality as a batter in challenging match situations. Broad recognised the Indian player's ability to perform when his team needed runs most, particularly in tight moments during Test cricket.
"He is a nightmare to face, especially in India. With him, I think about moments, and he's a proper gutsy player. With his batting especially, when the game was tight, he always seemed to stand up." Broad said.
"When his team needed runs, he could do it. He had a bit of a hybrid role as well, where sometimes he would come out at 5 with the ball swinging around. He's an underrated batter in a funny way," he added.
Broad's assessment of Jadeja as a batter
Broad further highlighted Jadeja's statistical achievements and the difficult selection decisions his performances have created for India's selectors. The former pacer noted that Jadeja's numbers have been so strong that India's selection committee has faced tough choices between him and other world-class spinners.
"His numbers are phenomenal to the point where they never knew whether to play him or Ravi Ashwin in England. That's a testament to Jadeja," Broad said.
India's focus turns to the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on Saturday, August 15, in Galle. Jadeja's role in that series is central to India's plans as they prepare for the upcoming international schedule.
