When reporters pressed for an update on his condition, the notoriously private head coach offered a rare, candid admission, via The Athletic.

“Evaluating my health is somewhat embarrassing, and I think getting old to everybody,” Shanahan explained. “So don’t take it personal — I’m trying not to anymore. I was messed up, and I’m getting a lot better.”

Getting back to a sense of normalcy is crucial for San Francisco as they ramp up for the 2026 NFL season. Fortunately, the offense certainly did not look like it missed a beat with Shanahan calling the shots during the joint session. Franchise quarterback Brock Purdy absolutely carved up the Titans’ defense, completing 21 of his 27 pass attempts during team drills without throwing a single interception. Purdy tossed three touchdowns on the day, connecting with veteran wideout Demarcus Robinson twice and finding tight end Luke Farrell for another score.

Having Shanahan back in his element and heavily involved is a massive boost for a 49ers squad carrying Super Bowl aspirations. The car accident and ensuing concussion symptoms were undoubtedly a terrifying hurdle, but with the cast gone and his health rapidly improving, Shanahan and his highly efficient offense look fully locked in on dominating the upcoming regular season.
