Dodgers’ Blake Treinen shares pivotal injury update

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ bullpen has been struggling since the All-Star break. One of the best units in the league prior to the break, Los Angeles’ relievers haven’t been the same since the festivities. Part of it is due to injuries: some of LA’s best relievers are still on the mend. That includes LA legend Blake Treinen, who’s been out since June due to several injuries.

However, it seems like the star reliever is making his way back slowly but steadily. The Dodgers pitcher was seen throwing a live session just before the team’s game against the Kansas City Royals. While Treinen is still on the injured list, he’s gearing himself up for a return. He talked to reporters after his live session, where he expressed his optimism about his return.

“Today felt amazing,” Treinen told SportsNet LA. “I feel very confident… If I’m healthy and I’m throwing like I was today, I feel like I can really help the team down the stretch.”

Treinen was put on the injured list in June of this year after suffering inflammation in his right elbow. It’s just the latest in what has been a recurring trend for the Dodgers reliever for the past few years. When he’s healthy, he’s been a key cog in Los Angeles’ success: he was dominant in 2021 (1.99 ERA, seven saves, 32 holds) and 2024 (1.93 ERA). However, age and injuries have definitely taken a toll on the pitcher’s performance. Last season, he appeared in just 32 games and had a disastrous 5.40 ERA through 26 2/3 innings as he dealt with right elbow issues.

This season seems to be more of the same for Treinen, with an elbow issue hampering his performance. He’s been a little better this year, but he’s also just been an average reliever for the Dodgers (3.47 ERA, a high mark for a relief pitcher). If the Dodgers want to go deep in this year’s postseason, they’ll need Treinen to be that same dominant force that he was just two years ago.
