In Europe, meanwhile, Rangers need a win on Thursday to avoid elimination from the Europa League in the third qualifying round – and even a win on the night is not guaranteed to be enough.

The first leg of this tie against Jagiellonia Bialystok ended in a 2-1 defeat for Rangers, who were made to pay for an error-strewn first half in Poland.

McInnes’ men then missed chances late on to leave them in a vulnerable position at the midway point of the tie.

Rangers’ woes were compounded on Sunday, as Hibernian departed Ibrox with all three points after a 2-1 triumph.

A confident victory here would potentially kick-start Rangers’ season, but a draw or defeat would only amplify the current feeling of doom and gloom at Ibrox.

Rangers will hope that the Ibrox crowd helps to get them over the line on Thursday, but their recent record on familiar soil is nothing to write home about.

Club Brugge, Genk, Roma and Braga all avoided defeat away to Rangers in Europe last term.

Derek McInnes’ side had their moments in the 2-1 losses to Jagiellonia Bialystok and Hibernian, but on both occasions they were undone by defensive sloppiness and wasteful finishing.
