Wizards’ Trae Young perfectly sums up Russell Westbrook

Washington Wizards star Trae Young and now-retired guard Russell Westbrook had their fair share of intense battles. They were always competitive with each other, a sign of mutual respect.

Young always knew he would be in for a long night every time he faced Westbrook, who was as feisty and relentless as they come, with a high motor that seemingly did not switch off. But now, Westbrook has decided to shut it down.

On Wednesday, he announced his retirement after a colorful 18-year career, which saw him win the MVP in 2017 and become a nine-time All-NBA Team member. While he never won a championship, Westbrook will forever be remembered as one of the all-time greats.

Young tipped his hat to Westbrook with a short message on X.

“Damn, Brodie. An absolute legend! What a hell of a career!” said the 27-year-old guard.

The two playmakers had the chance to become teammates in the upcoming season, as the Wizards were reportedly eyeing a reunion with Westbrook. He had a one-season stint in Washington in 2020-2021, averaging a triple-double of 22.2 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 11.7 assists. Westbrook, however, chose to hang up his jersey.

Westbrook, a nine-time All-Star and a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team, was also linked to the Miami Heat. The Sacramento Kings, meanwhile, were reportedly considering re-signing him after his one-season contract expired.

Aside from the Wizards and the Kings, Westbrook played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Houston Rockets, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the Denver Nuggets. He finished with career averages of 20.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, 8.0 assists, and 1.6 steals. He also tallied a league-record 209 triple-doubles.
