WNBA releases statement after Anti-Hate Task Force meeting

The WNBA has enjoyed unprecedented success over the past few years due to its rising popularity. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of negativity being hurled at the league.

While the WNBA has repeatedly assured that it will always protect the integrity of the league and its players, there is still significant work to be done. Players have complained about the verbal abuse and online harassment they receive regularly.

The WNBA formed an Anti-Hate Task Force to address the issues that have gained heightened attention recently. The new committee issued a statement after its first meeting on Wednesday, as shared by WNBA reporter Khristina Williams.

“Today’s meeting covered a wide range of topics, including ongoing discussions on transgender athletes and the continued hate and vitriol directed at players online. We will continue to engage all league stakeholders in the coming weeks and months,” read the statement.

“We will approach these important conversations thoughtfully and in alignment with the values of our league. There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA, and we strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others.”

The debates on transgender athletes resurfaced following the comments of Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Out of nowhere, former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White jumped in on the matter, leading to more polarization.

Last month, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert stressed that hate, which has become a currency on social media, is unacceptable and that they are constantly dealing with the toxicity hounding the league.

“The racism, the misogyny, the homophobia, the harassment, and threats directed to our players have no place in sport or anywhere else,” said Engelbert in a panel.

The WNBA Players Association has also repeatedly denounced the vitriol, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and diversity in the league.
